Don’t despair if the resolve behind your New Year’s resolutions is beginning to wane.
Whether it’s losing weight, getting fit, giving up smoking or drinking, saving money or learning a new language – 2019 seemed like it could be your oyster in the heady optimism of the December 31 celebrations.
But as a lot of people are probably discovering, words come a lot easier than action.
New research has also revealed January 12 to be the date when most give up on their New Year’s Resolution.
And a lack of motivation (25 per cent) is the leading reason why, according to health and ‘well-being’ tech firm MINDBODY.
A spokesman said: “For many, the new year means taking on new challenges, with research conducted by YouGov revealing that one in five (22 per cent) Britons have made a New Year’s resolution for 2019.
“However, Strava (the free mobile phone social fitness network) recently revealed that Saturday January 12 is the date most people give up on their New Year’s resolution, suggesting good intentions so often drop off.”
Given these findings, MINDBODY, which has a health and wellness booking app for mobile phones, recently investigated the nation’s attitudes towards setting “wellness-related goals”.
They discovered that the five leading reasons people feel they won’t achieve their new year’s goals this year, are:
- Lack of general motivation (25 per cent)
- Lack of money (18 per cent)
- Lack of time (14 per cent)
- Overly ambitious goals (14 per cent)
They’ll eventually forget (9 per cent)
In response to its findings, the firm has created a ‘Wellness Calendar’ to challenge people to fulfil one small act of “wellness” every day, for 31 days.
The activities featured on the calendar can be undertaken daily and started whenever people require a little wellness boost, or start to feel that motivation is dropping off.
The spokesman said: “All activities featured within the calendar have been chosen by MINDBODY studios and leading health and wellness influencers.
“Varying from starting the day with a set of burpees, to yoga poses for digestive health, or simply writing down three things to be grateful for, each activity featured in the calendar has been specifically chosen to address what people cited as the most common barriers to achieving their goals this year.
“What’s more, those who complete each activity featured on the calendar will be given the opportunity to take part in a free MINDBODY class.”
To be in with a chance of taking part in a free class, people must inform MINDBODY that they have completed each daily activity on social media (via a post or image) tagging @mindbodyuk or using the appropriate hashtag #WellnessCalendar.
Charlotte Newton, of MINDBODY, said: “Research reveals that people sometimes set an unrealistic new year’s resolution and then often give up by January 12.
“One step at a time is the best approach to achieving set goals, which is why we created the Wellness Calendar.
“Each wellness activity featured on the calendar is easy to follow and takes minimal time and effort to achieve but will ultimately leave people feeling revived and ready to tackle the day ahead.”
She added: “Maxwell Maltz suggested it takes 21 days to create a habit, therefore, ten minutes of wellness for 31 days should be pretty achievable for most of us.
“We believe there’s no better way to kick-start a brand new year than by feeling healthier and happier about the year ahead.”
