As a business grows, one of the most important aspects is attracting the right people to be a part of your team. It’s then equally (if not more) vital to keep those same people happy, committed and motivated. In addition, as the expectations and requirements of staff and teams continue to shift, it’s critical not underestimate the significance of getting this right.
In my experience when it comes to generating and maintaining staff morale, it pays to be creative. It’s an opportunity to show you’re thinking about things, a chance to illustrate there’s a genuine desire to produce a positive atmosphere and experience at work. Staff events are by no means a new concept but, getting colleagues together away from the workplace has always been a good way of enjoying each other’s company away from the potentially pressurized office environment. We’ve tried to come up with imaginative and meaningful ways of bringing people together.
As a company, we’ve always been keen to be as supportive of local events, sports teams and charities as possible, and as a result we’ve been able to offer colleagues a range of different events to attend. By sponsoring a number of different local sporting teams, the staff get the opportunity to attend fixtures on a regular basis while the charities we partner with run regular events that we invite and encourage colleagues to attend. We also lend our support to local one-off charitable events and initiatives with recent outings including open air cinema screenings, quizzes and dinners.
The benefit to this approach is twofold; it means as a company we are supporting worthwhile endeavors while also offering our people the chance to enjoy themselves. It’s proved to be a popular and enjoyable way of doing things. To complement this, we’ve also launched an additional initiative that provides staff with an additional day’s leave if they commit to taking part in a charitable or fundraising event. Again this has proved popular with members of our team raising money by taking part in skydives and marathon walks. I’ve made sure to get involved too, this year I’ll be running 100 miles across a frozen lake in Mongolia!
Occasional unexpected gestures can go a long way to maintaining happy staff too. This past Christmas we surprised our staff with an additional day off as recognition for another successful year, but smaller, more personal touches make a difference too – buying ice cream when it’s hot out is always popular! As we head towards winter, the opportunities to treat colleagues to ice cream may be limited, but the overarching message remains the same. It’s more important than ever to acknowledge the importance of maintaining staff morale and to recognize you have to play a major part in it. It doesn’t have to be expensive or logistically challenging, it just requires a bit of creativity coupled with a commitment to your team.
Of course one of the key components in maintaining a content workforce is creating a comfortable, welcoming and inspiring workspace, so if you need some help with adding an extra element of style, décor or branding to your glazing, partitions and walls, then I may just know someone that is able to help!
